GFR—glomerular filtration rate is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease. Your doctor can calculate it from the results of your blood creatinine test, your age, race, gender and other factors.

The earlier kidney disease is detected, the better the chance of slowing or stopping its progression.

Do you know your GFR level?

If you don't know your GFR level, don't worry, there is a GFR calculator in the top right corner, and you can calculate your GFR level by yourself. You can give us your result, then our expert can send you some free medical advices according to your GFR level.

If you know your GFR level, now let's see the relation between GFR level and chronic kidney disease stages.

Relation between GFR level and chronic kidney disease stages

A low GFR or creatinine clearance demonstrates kidney disease. The decline in kidney function can be either acute (sudden, often reversible) or chronic (long-term and irreversible). Repeated GFR or creatinine clearance measurements over time can identify kidney disease as acute or chronic.

Kidney function and creatinine clearance naturally decline with age. Fortunately, the kidneys have a huge reserve capacity. Most people can lose well over half their renal function without symptoms or significant problems.

Below shows the five stages of CKD and GFR for each stage:

● Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR>90 ml/min)

● Stage 2 mild CKD (GFR=60-89 ml/min)

● Stage 3 Moderate CKD (GFR = 30-59 ml/min)

● Stage 4 Severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 ml/min)

● Stage 5 End Stage CKD (GFR <15 ml/min)

A GFR of less than 60ml/minute for three or more months indicates chronic kidney disease. A GFR of less than 15ml/minute indicates full failure of the kidneys. GFR estimates between 60 and 89 mL/minute do not mean a person has chronic kidney disease unless there are other signs of disease. People with either higher than normal amounts of muscle mass, such as bodybuilders or people with lower than normal amounts of muscle mass, such as amputees or people with muscle wasting disorders (when the muscles become less dense than normal) can have GFR test results that do not appear normal, but may still be normal. A medical professional will explain the meaning of any GFR test done on a patient.

How to improve your GFR level?

The main causes of chronic kidney disease are high blood pressure and Diabetes. If you have these conditions, the first step is to get them under control with improved diet, exercise, and medications. If these conditions are not present, further testing may be needed to identify the cause of kidney disease. And your doctor may need to make changes in your medications to adjust for any decline in renal function. If you are lack of the related information about healthy diet or medications, you are welcomed to send us an email to, our expert will send it to you.

But we do believe that the most efficient way to improve the GFR level is to repair kidney damage and recover kidney function. Nowadays Chinese herbal medicines are commonly used in clinic to help kidney disease patients avoid or get rid of dialysis by recovering kidney function, and we hope every kidney disease patient could live a better life without dialysis.
