Acupuncture for Kidney Disease

AcupunctureWhat is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been practiced in China and other Asian countries for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points on the body. This is most often done by inserting thin needles through the skin, to cause a change in the physical functions of the body. The goal of acupuncture is to stimulate the body to heal itself.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on the assumption that Qi courses through the body just as rivers flow across the earth. A lattice of channels forms a web of Qi that unites all parts of the body. Within this model, acupuncture works by regulating the movement of Qi, and this Qi is responsible for the circulation of blood. So by restoring the healthy circulation of Qi, there is a healthy circulation of blood. Blood is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to each and every cell. Blood also carries away metabolic debris. So acupuncture affects us globally both by activating the delivery system that distributes the food, and by encouraging the hauling away of waste. Acupuncture supports healthy cellular nutrition and detoxification.

How is acupuncture performed?

The patient will be asked to lie down, either face-up, face-down or on his/her side, depending on where the needless are inserted. The acupuncturist should use single-use disposable sterile needles. As each needle is inserted the patient should feel them, but initially without pain. However, when the needle reaches the right depth there should be a deep aching sensation. Sometimes the needles are heated or stimulated with electricity after insertion. Once inserted, the needles will remain there for about twenty minutes.

How does acupuncture help chronic kidney disease patients?

Acupuncture can help chronic kidney disease patients relieve and cure some symptoms like back pain, headaches, muscle pain, allergies and other immune system dysfunctions, digestive problems fatigue, insomnia, asthma, depression, high blood pressure, diarrhea, irregularities in the heartbeat, vision and hearing problems, rheumatism, circulatory problems, etc.

There are a series of channels run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. Once there is obstruction in Channels or meridians, our health will lose balance. Acupuncture can stimulate your meridians and remove the block, improving kidney's self-cure and promoting kidney functions.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is considered to be very safe. In 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began classifying acupuncture needles as medical instruments, and it now requires that acupuncturists use only sterile, disposable needles. Also, acupuncturists will swab the acupuncture areas first with an antiseptic, so there is very little risk of infection. It's very important to visit a licensed practitioner, however, because poorly sterilized needles can transmit infectious diseases.

The most common side effects with acupuncture are soreness, slight bleeding, irritation or bruising at the needle site. Some people may feel tired or lightheaded after a session. In very rare cases, more serious complications can occur if the acupuncture needles pierce the kidney, lungs or another organ.

Despite its general safety, acupuncture isn't for everyone. People who have a bleeding disorder or who are taking blood thinners (such as Heparin and Coumadin) should not have the treatment. It's also not recommended for people who have pacemakers, implanted electrical devices or infusion pumps.
