Persistent high blood pressure makes patients more likely to develop heart problem which may kill the patients earlier than kidney damage itself. Thereby, patients with CKD are suggested to keep their blood pressure under control.

What is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force of your blood against your blood vessel wall. If you are diagnosed with High Blood Pressure or Hypertension, it means that this force become too high.

How are CKD and High Blood Pressure Connected?

High blood pressure is a leading cause of CKD in Aleuts while it is also a common complications of Kidney Disease. They are connected mainly in two ways as follows:

- High blood pressure can be a complication of CKD. Kidneys play an important role in regulating blood pressure. When kidneys are damaged, the declined kidney function causes out of control. Thereby, blood pressure increases.

- High Blood Pressure is a leading cause of CKD. If high blood pressure exists without a control, it can cause damages to the blood vessels throughout the body overtime. As a result, many organs, such as kidneys, may be involved. In addition, the damaged kidneys fail to remove the waste products and excessive fluids in your blood, which adversely makes the blood pressure elevate even more.

Why Do I Need to Lower High Blood Pressure?

- High Blood Pressure and CKD are a dangerous cycle. In other words, high blood pressure is the leading cause for Kidney Failure or End Stage Kidney Disease (ESRD). Kidney Failure or ESRD are permanent kidney damage when patients may be recommended with Dialysis or Kidney Transplant.

- If you have CKD, hypertension increases your risk to develop heart problems--a severe complications of CKD. Actually, sometimes the complications can even kill patients quicker than the kidney problem itself.

What is the Target Blood Pressure for patients with CKD?

The normal blood pressure in adults less than 120/80. Usually, if your blood pressure is at 140/90 or higher is believed high, which may increase the risk to develop hypertension over time.

For people with CKD, their blood pressure is suggested to be lower than 130/80. However, the target blood pressure differs from individual conditions, especially for people with Diabetes. Is There Any Suggested Treatment for High Blood Pressure in CKD patients?

A treatment plan should aim at controlling both your high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease and it should be based on your own stage of CKD. (find which Stages you are in, see “CKD Stages

Anti-hypertensive medicines. Several anti-hypertensive medicines are available for patients with CKD. The most common types of blood pressure medicines doctors prescribe are diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers. Healthy Living. Healthy living also helps keep your blood pressure under control naturally. You are suggested:

- get plenty of exercise-at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, most days of the week.

- maintain their weight at a level close to normal.

- avoid consuming too much alcohol.
